August 3 - whale watching & puffin habitat

It was our last day in St. John’s 😕. We hopped on the bike and went out to Bay Bulls (and that’s not inverted...Newfoundland speaks differently) to go on a whale watching tour and visit a puffin habitat. The weather has been exceptionally warm for here so we are enjoying!  Usual temps are 16.  We’ve been over 30 every day since arriving!  It’s our granddaughter Alivia’s birthday today.  Sad to miss it live but we will celebrate when we get home😊. She’s 6 years old!!! How did that happen!  We saw a lot of whales, humpback and fin.  The humpbacks are curious and we were encouraged to wave and make noise when they got close to the boat.  They were just feet away, and we enjoyed a mom & calf people watching, as the guide said.  They rolled, showed off their bellies and seemed to want to put on a show.  The fin whales stayed farther out but they were very sleek and entertaining as well.  After that we headed to a few islands that had 2 million puffins and other birds.  These are Atlantic puffins so smaller in size.  They can swim up to 300 feet below water and are referred to as submarines.  Was just fascinating to see the sheer quantity on the hillsides.  The boat went so close to the cliffs we all got a good look.

We had lunch here before going on the boat right behind us.
Happy Birthday Alivia!

  1. Lots of wildlife! Glad they all co-operated....although I guess there are enough of them to see, even if some are hiding:)
